Ed Bassin, Ph.D., President |
|
Ed Bassin is the President of ProfSoft. Ed founded ProfSoft in May 1999 with a vision for providing software and
services that would help health plans, providers, and employers to learn more about the cost and quality of medical care
from existing administrative data. He founded ProfSoft with a commitment to excellence in the field of claims analysis,
extending his career work developing both methodologies and software for the managed care industry. Dr. Bassin is best
known for his work with Symmetry Health Data Systems Episode Treatment Groups™. In addition to consulting with Symmetry
on the design and validation of their software, he has designed and developed ETG-based profiling systems for several
vendors and health plans. He has pioneered new uses of ETG grouped data including quality of care measurement, fraud and
abuse detection, and PMPM risk-adjustment. He currently directs the design and development of ProfSoft's suite of data
analysis products, including ProfSoft Episode™ and the ProfSoft Standards and Guidelines Engine. Ed is a "hands on"
executive working closely with both the company's research and development team and its customers.
Prior to founding ProfSoft, he worked for HPR Inc. (now McKesson) in both R&D and product management capacities. As
product manager, his leadership on both product content and marketing of that company's CRMS product suite helped the
company become the leading provider of claims analysis software at that time. In his R&D role, he conducted research on
the use of ETGs in efficiency measurement and used the results of that research to redesign the analytic algorithms in the
CRMS product suite. He also designed and led the introduction for the company's financial reporting tool, making it the
most successful product introduction in the managed care division's history. Ed also helped develop predictive modeling
algorithms. He also worked as Senior Scientist for ChoiceCare Health Plans before joining HPR. There he was a leader in
the design, development, and implementation of two separate provider profiling systems (one based on the Johns Hopkins ACG
Case-Mix system and the other based on Episode Treatment Groups™). Ed's data analysis work was a major factor in
ChoiceCare's accomplishment of being the first health plan in the country to both achieve full accreditation from NCQA
and produce complete HEDIS reports from administrative data.
Dr. Bassin was awarded a Ph.D. in Sociology from Indiana University. His academic work focused on statistical methods
and medical sociology. He has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in those fields while on the faculty at
Washington State University as well as publishing in both fields.
